Our Story
Our story began with a passion for geology and its application in a world facing challenges, such as responsible, stewardly use of earth resources, respect for the environment, while acknowledging the need for selection of quality earth materials for a range of engineered and construction uses.
With a background in the realm of soils, rock, aggregate and construction materials engineering, a keen knowledge of the requirements and limitations of these materials informed our experience in developing practical approaches in:
- Investigation and exploration of new and existing geologic sources of construction materials;
- Determining their extent, quality and value;
- Highlighting potential issues;
- Advising on extraction/mining and closure-reclamation plans;
- Supporting claims, disputes and litigation regarding these resources or products and construction made with these materials.

Our Approach
The focus of our services is on construction materials, in particular, construction aggregates (structural fill, road base, asphalt and concrete aggregates), railroad ballast, and armourstone/erosion control rock, as well as composite materials manufactured with aggregates, such as concrete, asphalt. Then there are also building cladding stone, ornamental stone, and rip rap/armourstone.
Together, these earth materials are “the most mined materials on earth”, representing an estimated 30 to 50 billion tonnes of extraction and production per year.
Our Expertise
In addition to the items listed above, we have considerable expertise and experience in problems related to sulphide minerals in rock and aggregate, such as pyritic heave, pyrrhotite degradation of concrete, and Acid Rock Drainage (ARD).
Additionally, we offer petrographic examination of concrete, per ASTM C856, and we have extensive experience in AAR assessment of concrete, and in the Damage Rating Index (DRI) analysis of AAR-affected concrete.
Our membership in various technical committees and specifications organizations enables us a forward-looking view of what new items and trends are on the specifications horizon, and provides an opportunity to see where the industry has been and how it has evolved and what the thinking of the industry was/is as it develops leading-edge testing procedures, protocols and limits.

Success Stories
“Fred Shrimer of Shrimer Geoconsulting Inc. was instrumental in the completion of our research project, providing guidance and feedback throughout. His knowledge and experience provided invaluable context to the objectives and outcomes of our project and allowed for the identification of quarries of interest to our project, and he established and maintained productive relationships with those aggregate quarries who took part. Fred was a pleasure to work with.”
“Fred has consulted for our company for years and his geological insights have been invaluable to our understanding and characterization of our aggregates. Having such a resource with great local knowledge paired with global experience has been helpful to me personally, as someone off of whom to bounce ideas, and to our company with petrographic examinations that help optimize our reserves usage. Not to sound cliché’, but Fred really does rock!”
“Fred has been hired by the Kitsumkalum Economic Development Group to work on multiple projects concerning our quarries. Fred has always been highly professional, informative and clear. He works with clients to ensure that they understand the necessary and important information that support the growth of their market objectives and opportunities. We have a high level of trust in working with Fred Shrimer, and look forward to working together on a project again.
“
Fred is a trusted advisor and mentor, not just to my self but to so many in our industry. When I start a sentence with “I asked Fred and he said…” there are rarely follow up questions, the Information is accepted because he is a trusted source.
Beyond his reputation, Fred has also acquired a vast experience with the local geology. Where others must research, Fred often has prior relatable experience, saving everyone time and money in futile effort.
I trust Fred, and would happily recommend him to anyone seeking a widely experienced, thoughtful and cost-effective consultant.

I have valued Fred’s expertise and deep knowledge of the aggregate industry for more than 20 years. Throughout this time, I have engaged with him in numerous discussions on aggregate deposition, the selection and application of appropriate testing methodologies and densities, and the use of analytical requirements to support sound decisions in mining, resource economics, and the mitigation of potential liabilities.
Fred is exceptionally knowledgeable on aggregate quality, particularly in relation to product applications. I have relied extensively on his expertise in aggregate petrography. As a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Technical Committee on Aggregates, he contributes valuable insight to both industry and government bodies. Fred is relied upon as an expert witness in conflicts related to aggregate performance.
